2007 – 2008 Grant Recipients awarded $21,814
Pete Misner (Woodmoor Principal)
- $2,500 Grant for 25 Global Positioning System units that can be
used for orienteering by all 5th grade students attending
Camp Casey and during the school year for units on geography and
survival. These tools will strengthen the orienteering experiences for
many years.
Pam Karp and Renee Colleran
(Woodmoor) - $2,000 Grant to upgrade the rotating collection
of physical education equipment that is used to improve balance,
coordination, aerobic conditioning and agility in PE classes across the
district.
Arrowhead
Heidi Lothspeich - $1,000
Grant to help support the Therapeutic Horseback Riding program at
Arrowhead. This program enriches the learning environment and provides
an innovative way for students to develop confidence, coordination and
social skills.
Martha Cady - $1,000 Grant to
purchase essential therapeutic teaching tools to help set up a therapy
program at Arrowhead that will meet the basic needs of students,
improving their capacity to learn and take advantage of the teaching
they receive.
Canyon Creek
Christy Jennings, Cindy Ries and
Karolyn Backholm - $1,000 Grant for Reader’s Workshop Theme
Kits to be used at Canyon Creek. These books will help instill the love
of reading in Canyon Creek students as well as increase reading
comprehension and vocabulary.
Cottage Lake
Casey Klinich, Karen Larson,
Christine Benior, and Ginger Bryant - $1,000 Grant to
purchase a variety of teaching tools and resources to assist with the
rapidly growing pre-K through 3rd grade population at Cottage
Lake.
Crystal Springs
Amanda Sympson, Irene Longaker,
Erin Colling and Lynn Emerson - $992 Grant for targeted read-aloud
and leveled books for Kindergarten classes. These books will encourage
students and parents to read together as well as develop a love of
reading.
Eastridge
Kari Chwirka - $975 Grant to
purchase specific supplemental library books to build the Reading
Strategies Library for Eastridge students and teachers.
Kenmore
Elementary
Pam Breckenridge, Sue Anderson and
Dana Vance - $960 Grant to purchase non-fiction books for
grades 1-6. This will assist in teaching the non-fiction unit of
study.
Kokanee
Clark Combs, Erin Burke, Wendy
Cooper, Kezia Cockrill, and Kathy Jacobs - $1,200 Grant
to purchase Reader’s Workshop materials for grades 4, 5 and 6. This
program accommodates a variety of reading levels, instills a love of
reading and strengthens student skills in comprehension, vocabulary,
spelling and fluency.
Kathy Flanagan - $1,000 Grant
to expand the Scientist in Residence program with non-fiction reading
materials. Dr. Flanagan works closely with Kokanee teachers to meet the
EALR’s at each grade level and also provides specific instruction to
students in scientific inquiry, method and writing.
Lockwood
Suzanne Wade, Barb Chessler, Mary
Obukowicz, Janet Rosema and Peggy Fargo - $950 Grant to
purchase materials that will help students focus on studying and
learning. These materials will help students learn how to concentrate,
focus and work for longer periods of time, therefore increasing their
success.
Sunrise
Lona Sepessy, Kathy Cissna, Janine
Schmoll, Annie Marashi, and Liz McVey - $1,000 Grant to
purchase a collection of graphic fiction and non-fiction books.
Students learn in different ways and deal with vastly different life
circumstances.
Woodin
Karen Kapovich, Leslie Connor,
and Vikki Berard - $4,000 Grant to purchase a variety of non
fiction text books for 4th, 5th and 6th
grades as well as the Spanish Dual Language Program. These books will
be used for a variety of learning objectives and a variety of skill
levels.
Heather Arnold - $942 Grant to
enhance the music program and provide every K-6 student an opportunity
to participate in a stage performance/production.
Sorenson
Carol Steffy - $300 Grant to
help support an ongoing project that encourages students and staff to
learn the processes involved in photography.
Canyon Park Junior
Danielle Knapp and Canyon
Park PE Specialists - $995 Grant to purchase a class set of
“WAVE BOARDS”. This new equipment will promote life-long fitness and
improve balance, coordination, aerobic conditioning and agility.
The Northshore Public Education
Foundation (NPEF) is dedicated to enhancing learning opportunities for
all Northshore students. In the past 10 years the foundation has
awarded 165 teacher grants totaling $150,000. Over 175,000 students
have benefited. In addition to teacher grants the foundation awarded
$110,000 to the Northshore School District for Science Materials at all
schools in 2005-2006. For the 2006-2007 school year NPEF is making the
following investment in Northshore schools and students:
2005-2006 Teacher Grants:
Forest Ecology at Olympic Park
Institute-Lockwood Elementary, Justine Hurley. The active
learning that takes place in this hands-on Field Science School
experience for 5th and 6th graders directly
complements classroom curriculum.

Scientist in Residence Program-Kokanee
Elementary, Cathy Flanagan. The consultation, guidance and
expertise of a professional scientist enhances the science curriculum
for all students as classroom teachers enhance their ability to teach
science.
The Guided Science Project-Canyon
Creek Elementary, Rodeen Peterson. This grant supports science
education for every classroom. Students K-6 will have a minimum of one
hour of inquiry-based science every week.
Consulting Program Curriculum
Development-Bothell High, Jan Morgan. This alternative
learning experience at Bothell is specifically designed to enhance
learning for at-risk general education students through individually
structured timetables and courses of study.
Orchestra Program-Leota
Junior High, Kate Labiak. NPEF will assist in meeting the need for
additional instruments due to increased enrollment in the music program
as well as the expansion of the 4th grade strings program.
Chairs for Learning-Woodmoor
Elementary, Beth Nelson. Students with severe disabilities will
benefit from these wooden chairs that provide both physical and sensory
support.
Literacy Block-Crystal
Springs Elementary, Shana Feil. Nineteen educators will work with
“read aloud” books to help 1st and 2nd graders,
English Language Learners (ELL) and Special Education students to learn
comprehensive reading skills.
Guided Reading Booksets for Grades
3-6-Sunrise Elementary, Susan Creager-Rieke. This grant will
equip the Intermediate Book Room with both fiction and non-fiction texts
that support the Northshore Literacy Vision.
Connecting First Grade Readers
with Leveled books-Fernwood Elementary, Nicole Ryan, Cindy
Kaufman, Ann Rubie, Megan Moyer, Janelle Narancic. This project
will put “just right” books into the hands of young readers and help
them learn the strategies and skills appropriate to their developmental
stage in reading.
Blues in the Schools-SAS,
Jim Geizler This program provides students with a unique opportunity
learn a truly American art form taught by professional musicians.
Professional Blues musicians teach participants to play the basic
structure of blues music. Participants learn group dynamics (harmony)
and cooperation (accompaniment).
