Math/Science/History
Seeds to Soup (Shelton View Elementary -
$800)
Provides individual, hand-on experiences with planting and growing
seeds and making “connections” related to where the food we eat comes
from and how things are inter-related in our world.
Measure For Measure (Inglemoor, Woodinville, Bothell Highs,
Northshore Jr - $1000)
Existing micro-pipets, used by students to experience authentic
scientific investigations, will be re-calibrated to extend the useful
life of the micro-pipets and ensure dependable experimental results.
Pacific Rim Cultural Boxes (Cottage Lake Elementary - $900)
Parent volunteers will participate in the
research and assembly of additional Pacific Rim Cultural Boxes.
Students will receive an enriched understanding of what countries are
part of the Pacific Rim and the wide cultural diversity existing
within that grouping.
Literacy
Soar To Success (Arrowhead Elementary -
$850)
Reading success and motivation are the program goals for students who
need extra time and instruction. Small group instruction and this
curriculum will provide an additional opportunity to learn to read.
Summer Reading Roundup (Crystal Springs Elementary - $135)
This reading curriculum will give students increased attention to
their reading, writing and comprehension skills during the summer
break.
Leveled Reading Book Tubs (Crystal Springs - $910)
Increase reading skills and strategies of first graders through books
that are appropriate for the readers’ level of reading. These books
will provide opportunities for students to self select books to read
at their own independent instructional level.
Reading, Thinking & Caring (East Ridge Elementary - $364)
Learning Center students will benefit from books designed to build
reading skills through character education themes of friendship,
honesty, and caring.
Earobics Step 1 -2 (Lockwood Elementary - $952)
This computer program teaches fundamental listening and sound
awareness skills. Older students benefit from learning language
comprehension and following directions.
Third and Fourth Grade Transition Classes (Maywood Hills Elementary
- $1000)
Students will become successful, independent readers. Two specially
designed classrooms will provide structured, consistent phonics
instruction with the Phonics for Reading program for students who need
additional time and practice.
Traveling Readers (Shelton View Elementary - $1000)
First and Second graders will have the opportunity to share their
reading skills at home with materials that are appropriate to their
level of reading. This will ensure success for all.
Project Smile (Westhill Elementary -
$900)
Intermediate teachers and specialists will purchase books to provide
students with modeling and practice in reading expository text.
Topics sought will focus on social studies so that reading instruction
can be integrated into the content areas.
The Poetry Prince (Woodin Elementary - $314)
Anyone at the school (staff/students) can become the Poetry Prince by
learning a poem to read or recite. They will wear a royal robe and
crown as they perform their poem for each class. ESL students will
especially benefit from additional exposure to meter and rhyme in
English poetry.
Content Area Book Sets (Woodin Elementary - $972)
Non-fiction picture books in science and social studies that support
vocabulary development. These books will benefit students that are
learning English, reading delayed or have specific learning
disabilities.
Guided Reading Books (Woodmoor Elementary -$1000)
Books that match the reading level of the reader will be added to the
school collection. These books will provide opportunities for all
students to practice known reading strategies, comprehend the material
read and build fluency.
Lights! Camera! Action! (Woodmoor Elementary - $652)
Students will special needs (Contained Learning
Center) will receive positive reinforcement for following directions
in music and physical education by being videotaped and then viewing
themselves in a short movie.
Music/Art
Classroom Marimba Ensemble (Hollywood
Hill Elementary - $500)
Students will explore traditional music of other cultures such as
Ghana, South Africa, South America and the Caribbean with Marimba-type
instruments. In addition to building music skills, students will
increase their cultural awareness and appreciation of others.
World Percussion (Skyview Junior High - $500)
Supports an elective World Drumming Class with hand-drums, bells,
shakers from Africa, South America and Asia.
Elementary Visual Arts (Crystal Springs - $600)
Visual Arts program will be offered through the after-school Swing
Shift program. Students will work towards the Washington State
Standards in Elementary Visual Arts through art materials provided by
this grant.
Quilting Club (Crystal Springs Elementary - $250)
Quilters will plan and complete a moderately complex project and
create a practical piece of art. They will see that their math skills
have a real-life application.
Activity Stations (Moorlands Elementary - $100)
Art
materials will be provided for 2 Activity Stations. The Activity
Stations, an integral part of the Moorlands curriculum, provide
experiences in curriculum areas of math, technology, art, science,
music, etc.
Exotic Sculpture Workshop (Skyview Junior High - $1000)
A 10 week basic sculpture class. Students will
create bronze and cast glass sculptures. Art work will be celebrated
on the Skyview web page and in their newsletter.
Physical Fitness
Digi-Walking to a Healthy Lifestyle
(Kenmore Elementary - $992)
Pedometers will be used to promote life long fitness habits. Students
and staff will be motivated to incorporate fitness into their everyday
lives. All will be challenged to find new ways to take more steps per
day/per activity. Use of Digi-Walkers will involve multiple
curricular areas (math, science, PE) and age groups.
Presidential Active Lifestyle Program (Sunrise Elementary - $972)
Motivation for students to begin and
maintain physical activity as a regular part of their lifestyle
through the use of pedometers and a Lifestyle Log.
